Jen Pettay is a mixed media artist whose work includes 2 dimensional and 3-dimensional art. The artists’ work includes multiple texture techniques, bold colors, and diverse themes. With a background in art and graphic design, Jen’s style teeters between abstract and contemporary impressionism, with some work that pushes a surreal theme. She works in multiple mediums often using contemporary layering techniques, with a love of acrylic due to its diversity.
Jen art has allowed her to express thoughts and images representing a more universal connection through symbolism and an array of colors used. The combination of nature and geometry that creatively evolves throughout her work takes the viewer to a deeper level of thought. Her use of bright colors is to express feelings of spiritual life moments, and a desire to create an uplifting, insightful, and healing environment.
As a lifelong Kansan, Jen draws much of her inspiration from the colors of the sky and nature. Immerse in the arts from a small age, Jen spent several years drawing and painting at the family dining table. This helped her progress her skills throughout childhood. During adolescence, she excelled in advanced art studies under artists such as Mace John, Ginger Marshall, and Evonne Eckert. Her love of impressionistic and the early 20th century abstract art movement is what she has found fascinating, with respect to the surreal artist movement. Jen’s style is characterized by vibrant hues, combining nature and science themes, while playing on light, shape, and texture. Her work invites viewers to look deeper into nature, themselves, and serves as a testament to her belief in depth and light in all situations.
Pettay has been involved in several creative collaborations and events. Film prop restorations, music, performing arts, costume design, décor, co-publishing a cookbook, graphic design, and raising a family. Throughout this time, she has continued a personal study of art through text and practice. In 2019 Jen resumed her art journey. Since 2020, Jen has been displaying her art in gallery shops such as Wichita City Arts, Mulberry Gallery satellite show, and live painting events.
