A lifelong resident of Kansas, she draws much of her inspiration from the expansive skies and rich natural landscape around her from her travels. Her artistic journey began early, and was nurtured by a creative family that often worked on several art and craft projects around the dining table. With a love for drawing and painting, she continued to refine her technique through mentorships with noted artists such as Mace John, Ginger Marshall, and Evonne Eckert. As a primarily self-taught artist, she has developed a distinctive style through years of independent exploration, cultivating a deep appreciation for Impressionism as well as early 20th-century abstract, surreal, and modernist movements.
Pettay's work is characterized by a vibrant interplay of color, light, and form. Her work creates an invitation to see the world through the lens of interconnectedness. In addition to her fine art practice, she has been involved in a wide range of creative pursuits, including film prop restoration, costume and set design, music, co-publishing a cookbook, and graphic design. Currently based in South Hutchinson, KS, Jen Pettay continues to create and grow while exploring new techniques and themes in her basement studio, working in radio, volunteering in the arts, and sharing her journey with her husband, Joshua.
