Jen Pettay Art

Jen Pettay is a mixed media artist whose work spans both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms. Her distinctive style merges bold color palettes, richly layered textures, and symbolic themes, often navigating the space between abstract expressionism, contemporary impressionism, and surrealism. Rooted in a background in fine art and graphic design, her practice integrates a wide range of materials, with a particular affinity for acrylics due to their versatility and depth. The artist aims to create modern and surreal art that evokes a more uplifting and positive experience for viewers.

Inspired by the interplay of nature, geometry, and the spiritual realm, Jen creates vivid and dynamic works that encourage introspection and emotional resonance. Her compositions are layered with meaning, inviting viewers to explore the unseen connections between science, nature, and the human experience. Vibrant colors are employed not only for their aesthetic power, but as a means to evoke healing, joy, and a deeper sense of spiritual presence.

A lifelong resident of Kansas, she draws much of her inspiration from the expansive skies and rich natural landscape around her from her travels. Her artistic journey began early, and was nurtured by a creative family that often worked on several art and craft projects around the dining table. With a love for drawing and painting, she continued to refine her technique through mentorships with noted artists such as Mace John, Ginger Marshall, and Evonne Eckert. As a primarily self-taught artist, she has developed a distinctive style through years of independent exploration, cultivating a deep appreciation for Impressionism as well as early 20th-century abstract, surreal, and modernist movements.

Pettay's work is characterized by a vibrant interplay of color, light, and form. Her work creates an invitation to see the world through the lens of interconnectedness. Her pieces often explore the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical, encouraging a dialogue between art, self, and the divine.

In addition to her fine art practice, she has been involved in a wide range of creative pursuits, including film prop restoration, costume and set design, music, co-publishing a cookbook, and graphic design. Since resuming her full-time artistic journey in 2019, she has exhibited in numerous art shows, live painting events, and several curated gallery installations.

Jen Pettay is active in the Kansas arts community, and advocates for the integration of the arts into education and public life. She views art as a vital tool for an uplifting connection, with each piece a reflection of her belief in the transformative power of creativity.

Currently based in South Hutchinson, KS, Jen Pettay continues to create and grow while exploring new techniques and themes in her basement studio, working in radio, volunteering in the arts, and sharing her journey with her husband, Joshua.
